I was supplied with a black and white photo of the football player to use on the cover, and the author wanted him to look unrecognizable. So, I used an online "cartoonizer" app to generate the face and head from the original photo. I also colorized the photo, and added the blue sky. Picking up the crimson uniform color from the back cover photo, I made a striped pattern in Adobe Illustrator, as well as the "shield" shape. The title text was warped in Photoshop to fit in the top curve of the shield.
